About Us - Past to Present

Chequers Hotel opened in 1987, when Lyn and John Benn, who had previously owned and run the Black Cock Inn at Broughton bought the site.  This originally consisted of a ground floor restaurant with function room and living accommodation.  Chequers Hotel occupies the site of the town's first free school founded in 1622.  The building you see today was built in 1872 and was known as the Green School.  Closed as a school in 19..  it was run as a restaurant called the Green Goose.  On purchasing the building Lyn and John set about creating the building you see today.  Converting the annexe from a school hall into 15 bedrooms was the first step followed by installing a first floor in the main building creating the Poaka Beck Restaurant and bedrooms.  In 2005 the Castle Suite and the Pinfold Room were created and Chequers Hotel became licensed for Civil Weddings.

Work continued on the building, when, in 2009 the living accommodation was re-designed to create 5 new contemporary bedrooms.  With planning permission granted to bring the restaurant onto the ground floor and 6 new bedrooms on the first floor, the vision we had for Chequers continues today.

Our team of staff is Chequers Hotel and Poaka Beck restaurant's best asset and the friendliness and professionalism of the team is commended time and time again by our guests.  Over the years we have created a good working environment and ensure that our staff feel valued and enjoy coming to work.  We are proud of our history as an independent and family run hotel.
