The Lake District
England's largest National Park is only 15 miles from Dalton-in-Furness, which makes the Chequers Hotel an excellent base to stay and explore the southern part of the Lake District.
Right on the edge of the Lake District
Windermere and Coniston Water lie in the southern part of the National Park and offer two very different Lake District experiences. The main town on Windermere is Bowness, which is a popular tourist destination and has several attractions to visit, including: the Lake District Steamers, Aquarium of the Lakes, Haverthwaite to Lakeside Steam Trains and the Beatrix Potter Museum. Worth a visit in the surrounding area are: Fell Foot Park, Grizedale Forest and on a wet day the town of Kendal, famous for its Mint Cake.
Coniston offers a more tranquil experience of the lakes and is easier to get off the tourist trails. There are breath taking walks and mountain bike trails up the Old Man and Walna Scar and the lake accommodates a plethora of outdoor pursuits, including sailing, canoeing and at the height of summer, swimmers too.
Explore, Adventure or just Chill Out
There is loads to explore within the Lake District National Park and on the outskirts. The Chequers Hotel is an ideal base to stay and our friendly staff will be happy to help you with travel arrangements to attractions during your visit.
